Well, it looks like Thursday will be the day. The day for what, you may ask. The day that we'll begin our Pacific Coast ESB Tour. We'll leave our apartment in Seattle, hop on the ferry to Bremerton and then start biking south.
- if "ESB" turns out to be "Eat Sleep Bike," we'll end up in San Diego sometime in early-mid October.
- if "ESB" turns out to be "Extra Sore Butts," we'll end up back in Seattle soon.
- or "ESB" might be "End in Santa Barbara."
- or perhaps "Extremely Stupid Bickering" ends the trip before we hit Oregon.
Over the past couple of weeks as we've told some friends and family about our plans to pack up all of our worldly possessions on our bikes (okay, not all of them, just a few days worth of clothes, various supplies and a credit card), people have asked lots of questions about this bike trip. So, to get started on this blog, we'd share the FAQ.
Pacific Coast ESB Tour FAQ
1. What does ESB stand for?
A. See above.
2. Why are you doing this?
A. We don't know.
3. Isn't it all downhill from Seattle to San Diego?
A. Hmmm. Seattle is at sea level. San Diego is at sea level. Well, at least it looks downhill on the globe.
4. Do you know where you are staying every night?
A. No.
5. Are you camping?
A. No, or should we say, only by accident and without camping gear.
6. Are you doing laundry?
A. You'll notice that ESB did not stand for "Eternally Stinky Bikers."
7. How many miles will you ride every day?
A. Probably about 60. Except the days we ride more or less than 60.
8. How far is it?
A. If we go all the way to San Diego, it is about 1750 miles.
9. How long will it take?
A. Were you asleep in math class? I think if you divide 1750/60, you could answer that question yourself. But, call it 29 ride days + rest days + weather delays + sore butts + visiting friends. In another words, we don't know.
10. Where do you ride?
A. On the road.
11. No, really, where do you ride?
A. The route is to ferry to Bremerton, ride through Shelton, Centralia and Longview, Washington, then head along the Columbia river to Astoria, Oregon on the Oregon Coast. Make a left and head south to San Diego along the coast.
12. Are you doing this by yourself?
A. No, we are doing it with each other.
13. What are you taking?
A. See future post on packing list and pictures.

Josh's first response when I told him about your trip was, "COOOL!" So, can you guys pick him up in Berkeley for the southern leg of the trip and we'll meet you in San Diego? ;-)
Is there some way for Josh to pedal and for me to just coast??? I could probably use a fresh set of legs and new butt in Berkeley.
Guys, if the flights were too expensive, you could have used air miles:-)
