Shelton to Centralia by way of Elma

64 miles, 1200 feet climbing, lots of road kill, not much to see…

We woke up after a good night’s sleep at the Ritz Carlton – err – the “City Center Best Rate Motel.” No really, that is the name of the motel in Shelton. Formerly known as the “Bates Motel.” We are hoping it is the worst motel we stay at during this trip but that seems unlikely (in fact, Deborah thinks it is among the worst motels she ever stayed at – but it didn’t crack Arn’s Top 10 Worst List).

Today’s ride was largely uneventful – reasonably scenic rural scenery through Elma but it gets worse as you get to Centralia. Two more days and we’ll be at the coast and then the eye candy should be fantastic.

We saw one dead raccoon; two dead possums; and four dead dear. We think that someone in these parts may have been inspired by Sarah Palin’s speech the other night and her ability to field-dress a moose. Because one of the road-kill deers had been skinned! Though the meat was left so obviously it was done by a vegetarian!

Tonight’s lodging is much more of a treat. McMenamin’s is a small chain of hotels/restaurants/cinemas that take old historic buildings and remodel them into hotels/bars/cinemas, etc. We are staying at the Olympic Club which must have a fascinating history but our butts are too sore to explore it. The movie starts at 8:45 tonight and Deborah was asleep at 9:30 last night so it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing “Sex and the City” or enjoying sex in this city.
